Fibroid Treatment

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus. They are common in women of reproductive age and vary in size, number, and location. While some fibroids may not cause any symptoms, others can lead to heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, frequent urination, constipation, and difficulties in conceiving. The treatment of fibroids depends on factors such as the size and location of the fibroids, the severity of symptoms, the woman's age, and her plans for future pregnancy. With timely diagnosis and proper treatment, fibroids can be effectively managed or removed, improving a woman’s quality of life and reproductive health.

Common Treatment Options for Fibroids

- Watchful Waiting: If fibroids are small and not causing symptoms, regular monitoring may be advised without immediate treatment. - Medications: Hormonal therapies like birth control pills, GnRH agonists, or progestin-releasing IUDs can help shrink fibroids or reduce bleeding. Pain relief medications may also be used for symptom control. - Non-invasive Procedures: MRI-guided focused ultrasound surgery (FUS) is a non-surgical option that uses high-frequency sound waves to destroy fibroid tissue. - Minimally Invasive Procedures: - **Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE):** Cuts off blood supply to the fibroids, causing them to shrink. - **Laparoscopic or Hysteroscopic Myomectomy:** Surgical removal of fibroids using small incisions or through the vagina, preserving the uterus for future pregnancy. - Traditional Surgery: - **Abdominal Myomectomy:** Recommended for large or multiple fibroids, preserving the uterus. - **Hysterectomy:** Complete removal of the uterus; considered a definitive solution, especially for women not planning further pregnancies.
